Mthunzi is the Chichewa word for “Shelter”

At Mthunzi Ministries, we walk alongside children and youth who have experienced life on the streets of Malawi. We believe that every child deserves to be seen, loved, protected, and given a chance to thrive.

Mthunzi is the Chichewa word for “Shelter”. This is what we want to be: A Shelter, where hopeless kids find hope, love and care. Believing that no child is lost. No situation is hopeless.

We are based in Blantyre and reach out to street-connected children with practical help, long-term support, and God’s love — one child, one story at a time.

Our Purpose

We exist to restore dignity and hope to children who have been forgotten, rejected, or left behind. Many of the children we serve have lived on the streets, faced abuse, or been separated from family. We offer them safety, education, healing, and the opportunity to dream again

To Rescue

To support children to come off the street and back to their families or alternative housing.

To Restore

To invite the children to grow in self-confidence, and to thrive physically, emotionally and spiritually, connected in loving community.

To Revive

To help rebuild lives for the future through investing in access to education and building skills to be self-sustaining as adults.

What we do

Street Outreach

We meet children where they are — on the streets. With food, first aid, a listening ear, and care, we build trust and open the door to a new path.

Mthunzi Boys Centre

A residential center for boys who have lived on the streets — a place to learn, eat, play, grow, and know they belong.

Safe Home for Girls

Our residential program offers protection, healing, and a family-like environment for vulnerable girls, with a focus on school, counselling, and faith.

Back to School

We help children return to school and stay in school — with uniforms, school fees, tutoring, and daily encouragement.

Nursery & Early Childhood Education

We run a nurturing nursery school for the youngest children — building strong foundations through play, love, and learning.

Prison Outreach

We visit and support minors in prison — bringing hope, reintegration support, and reminding them they are not forgotten.

Vocational Training

As the children grow up and need to support themselves as adults, we support them to develop skills that can help them to be self-sustaining and contribute to the community around them.
